In The Well

Option 1.

It was discovered somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean by a cargo ship traveling from Perth, Australia to Port Louis, Mauritius. One of the ship-hands saw an eerie blackness just a kilometer away before dawn. The moon, starting to settle into the horizon, reflected across the vast ocean surrounding the ship, but died where the ship-hand’s gaze fixed. For almost an hour, the ship-hand starred at it, puzzled by what could be causing such a vast blackness so different from the shimmery waves around it. As the sun peaked through, he saw the outline of the outer rim of a chasm that swallowed the ocean.

Not long after the captain sent a distress call to surrounding nation’s coast guards, did several navy fleets waving flags of Sri Lanka, China, India, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, and more set sail towards the anomaly. Aerial photographs soon circulated worldwide.

Option 2.

It was discovered by a cargo ship traveling from Perth, Australia to Port Louis, Mauritius, somewhere half way in its voyage. The captain sent a distress signal to all neighboring countries. Immediately, rescue boats waving flags of India, Indonesia, Australia, and Sri Lanka set sail towards the location. Not long after arriving at the coordinates did their navy fleets join too. Aerial photographs quickly began to circulate worldwide, met with both disbelief and skepticism. But as several more countries, including the United States, China, Russia, and Japan, sent their military fleets to the same location did more of us begin to believe it to be true.

On December 17th, 2022, a giant chasm, the size of a large island, was discovered in the middle of the Indian Ocean. From the pictures alone, it resembled an almost perfectly circular hole surrounded by ocean. Near the perimeter, a shallow, thin ring of black, tarry rock poked out above the water. From where the light could penetrate into the mouth, the sides of the opening tunneling downward seemed to also be lined by the same material.

Nobody knew how long such a thing had been there for or when it formed. Speculation about its origins began to circulate widely, with several theories ranging from an undiscovered wonder present for centuries to evidence of alien contact. As world scientists and experts began to join their state-sponsored voyages towards the anomaly, the leading scientific explanation was a seismic event triggered the exposure of a weak spot below the Earth’s crust, leading to the formation of a massive hole at some point in time. No seismic events had occurred in the area recently, but since only 5% of our ocean has been charted, the explanation was believable enough to most and unsatisfying to many.

A week after the initial discovery, almost every nation had a military entourage stationed around the perimeter. It had been called several names, but Japanese word “Ido” stuck, translating into “well” in English. So that’s what the news began calling it too. The well measured 22 miles in diameter…

An almost completely international cooperation effort was led to study the well. Countries shared their data, and several tasks forces of scientists and experts assembled to…

What was stranger was its shape. It was perfectly symmetrical. And although it was in the ocean, the inside of the well was empty. On the outside, it was harder to appreciate the shape, but dive teams investigating the outer portion of the well quickly realized it was perfectly cylindrical.
